Heavy rains led to large-scale flooding in Telavi. Due to a sharp rise in water levels, the Telaviskhavi River overflowed its banks. It flooded sections of Kavkasioni and Alazani avenues, as well as several other streets in the city.
Floodwaters inundated the ground floors of residential buildings, shops, pharmacies, and commercial premises. Vehicles, power lines, and the gas distribution network were damaged. Thousands of customers were left without electricity and natural gas.
The most critical situation has developed on Kavkasioni Street. Overnight, a mudslide carrying a large amount of rocks and mud completely destroyed a bridge connecting two streets.
Due to safety concerns, authorities evacuated residents from the agricultural market area and several other high-risk locations. Traffic remains blocked on several central streets of the city, with the situation being monitored by patrol police.
The governor of the Kakheti region, Platon Kalmakhelidze, stated that all emergency services are working on site. After water levels receded, road clearing operations began using heavy machinery to remove rocks and mud. According to him, preliminary damage is assessed as significant, but the final scale of the destruction will only be known after an assessment of the damaged infrastructure.
