Black Sea water off Georgia’s coast is within normal limits

Georgia’s National Environmental Agency stated that the water quality in the Black Sea along the country’s entire coastline is within normal limits. This conclusion is based on the results of laboratory tests.

The agency noted that seawater quality monitoring is conducted continuously. Every month, specialists take samples at 12 locations along the coast, and the water samples are analyzed in an accredited laboratory of the National Environmental Agency, which is equipped with modern, high-precision equipment.

During the analysis, specialists assess:

  • hydrobiological and chemical indicators;
  • the content of 13 heavy metals and petroleum hydrocarbons;
  • 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons;
  • a number of other physicochemical parameters.

According to all conducted studies, seawater quality along the entire coast of Georgia remains within normal limits.

The agency also reported that it continues to improve its monitoring system in accordance with the requirements of the European Union’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

The results of the laboratory tests are regularly published on the official website of the National Environmental Agency.
