“A single protocol letter is not enough to undo the consequences of Georgian Dream’s policies,” Lasha Parulava, a member of the United National Movement (UNM) party, said, commenting on US President Donald Trump’s letter of thanks to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. The opposition politician believes that it does not signal a restoration of relations between Tbilisi and Washington.
“It is impossible and will not be feasible to reset the damaged relations with the US, which resulted from Ivanishvili’s repressive policies and anti-democratic steps, with just one protocol letter from Donald Trump…
To reset relations, concrete measures must first be taken: releasing political opponents and political prisoners, as well as creating an electoral environment that enjoys the full trust of the international community. ‘Georgian Dream’ is not only failing to do this, but is also expanding repressions. Therefore, I do not believe that this letter or the statements of government representatives will lead to any results,” Parulava said.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Irakli Kobakhidze thanking him for his congratulations on US Independence Day. In his message, the American leader noted that joint work between the two countries in support of sovereignty, security, and long-term prosperity would allow for significant progress.
