Tskhinvali has expressed dissatisfaction with the EU’s attempt to pressure Syria into reconsidering its decision and revoking its recognition of Georgia’s occupied regions as «independent states».
The de facto Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tskhinvali stated that such declarations constitute interference in Syria’s internal affairs.
“The European Union, which verbally declares its commitment to the principles of international law and respect for state sovereignty, is in reality trying to dictate to independent Syria which foreign policy decisions to make and which to annul,” — officials in the occupied region of Georgia noted.
Tskhinvali recalled that Syria’s 2018 decision on recognition was made “in accordance with the norms of international law” and is not subject to revision under external pressure. Furthermore, in the Russian-controlled part of Georgia, Brussels’ attempts to influence this issue are deemed “futile and counterproductive.”
Tskhinvali urged the EU to pay attention to the reasons that, according to the de facto authorities, led to the recognition of the so-called independence of «South Ossetia», accusing Tbilisi of aggressive policies during the events of August 2008.
As a reminder, for its part, the so-called South Ossetia — the Tskhinvali region of Georgia, Samachablo — declared its so-called independence from Georgia in the early 1990s. Following the Russo-Georgian war of August 2008, its «independence» was recognized by Russia. It was subsequently joined by Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, and Syria (a total of 5 UN member states — Ed.).
Tuvalu recognized the Georgian region in 2011 but withdrew its recognition in 2014. Vanuatu had also previously announced its recognition but later reaffirmed its support for Georgia’s territorial integrity.
The majority of the world’s nations, including EU member states, the United States, and Georgia, do not recognize the occupied regions of Georgia as independent states and view them as part of Georgia’s territory.
This position is regularly reaffirmed by UN General Assembly resolutions and EU statements.
