Suspect Detained in Attack on Comedian Onise Okriashvili

Law enforcement agencies have detained one person in connection with the attack on comedian Onise Okriashvili, reports the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. According to the agency, the suspect was detained after turning himself in at a police station.

“The investigation has established that on July 22 of this year in Tbilisi, the accused used physical violence against Onise Okriashvili, after which he fled the scene.

Shortly after the crime was committed, the individual voluntarily presented himself to the Vake–Saburtalo police department, where he was detained by law enforcement officers as an accused party.

The investigation is being conducted under Article 126 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (violence). Investigative actions are ongoing,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.

A theory circulating on social media suggests that the attack may have been triggered by a joke told by Onise Okriashvili on a show. The comedian, while discussing whom a fictional character might hypothetically “hate,” mentioned the famous writer Nodar Dumbadze as a intentionally absurd example. A short, out-of-context excerpt of the performance was quickly circulated by pro-government television channels and affiliated TikTok and Facebook pages, framing it as an insult to the writer.
