The hepatitis C cure rate in the country has reached 99%, according to Georgia’s Ministry of Health. As for hepatitis B, the ministry reports that Georgia has already met the regional targets set by the World Health Organization (WHO): disease prevalence among children stands at 0.03%, newborn vaccination coverage at birth has reached 96%, and full-course vaccination coverage (three doses) is at 90%.
The ministry reported that Georgia has advanced to a new stage of international validation for the elimination of viral hepatitis. This means the country is preparing for international recognition from WHO of the progress achieved in combating hepatitis B and C.
This year, Georgia plans to receive international validation from WHO in two areas: confirmation of progress in eliminating hepatitis C and confirmation of the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B. Applications in both areas have been prepared to achieve gold-tier validation—the highest level.
The country’s ultimate goal is the complete elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030, aligning with the timeline established by WHO’s global strategy, Georgia’s Minister of Health stated.
Council members reviewed the national validation report prepared in accordance with WHO requirements. According to the document, 87.3% of patients with chronic hepatitis C have already been diagnosed, and 87.1% of identified patients have initiated treatment, exceeding WHO targets, the Ministry of Health noted.
