A new interim head of the US diplomatic mission has taken office in Georgia. As announced by the US Embassy, career diplomat Amy V. Diaz has been serving as the US Chargé d’Affaires ad interim in Tbilisi since July 2026, succeeding Alan Purcell in this post.
Amy Diaz is a senior member of the US Foreign Service. Prior to her assignment to Georgia, she served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim and Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Malawi, Deputy Director of the Office of Policy and Global Issues in the Bureau of European Affairs at the US Department of State, Head of the Consular Section in Zimbabwe, and led the counter-narcotics team at the US Embassy in Afghanistan.
Previously, the diplomat also served as a Rule of Law Advisor and Summit of the Americas Coordinator in Panama, Head of the Internal Political Unit at the US Embassy in Tbilisi, as well as Vice Consul in Zimbabwe and Mexico.
Diaz joined the US Department of State in 2002 through the Presidential Management Fellows program, and has been a career Foreign Service officer since 2005.
She graduated from St. John’s College in Maryland and subsequently earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arizona. Over the course of her service, she has been the recipient of numerous top departmental awards from the US Department of State. Amy Diaz is married and has one child, the diplomatic mission noted in its statement.
