Several public organizations and political parties from occupied Abkhazia have issued a joint statement regarding acts of intimidation and pressure to which, they claim, Elchin Adzynba, a returnee from Turkey, is being subjected. According to the authors, she systematically receives threats due to her public and political activities “aimed at the de-isolation of the Republic of Abkhazia and its international recognition.”
“These actions unfolded against the backdrop of her active and courageous speeches at international venues, including the UN, where she consistently conveys the position of the Abkhaz people. Following these incidents, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights submitted an official communication to the Georgian government, signed by five United Nations Special Rapporteurs, which demonstrates the severity of the situation and the recognition of these threats at the highest international level.”
The statement notes that the threats against Adzynba are not symbolic but real. The joint letter cites several incidents that, according to the authors, confirm the claims of ongoing pressure. It is noted that Elchin Adzynba is taking necessary precautions and has filed a complaint with the Turkish prosecutor’s office.
“The terror and systematic pressure targeting our compatriot over her clear civic stance once again highlight the aggressive nature of Georgia’s policy at all levels. These actions are aimed at hindering the international recognition of our country and preventing the position of the Abkhaz people from reaching the international community,” the text reads.
The authors of the statement are convinced that “these actions are taking place with the direct support of Georgian special services and the Georgian authorities as a whole.”
They believe that the de facto authorities of Abkhazia must immediately intervene in the situation and place Adzynba’s life and health “under state protection,” up to providing her with personal security. In addition, they argue that this issue should be raised at the Geneva International Discussions, and “all available diplomatic mechanisms” should be deployed to influence the Georgian side.
