Georgian Interior Ministry: 3 Detained for Extorting Online Loans

Officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia have detained three individuals who, under the threat of edged weapons, forced two citizens to apply for online loans from various banks. According to the Interior Ministry, the suspects forced one of the victims to fully cash out the approved amount and unlawfully seized the funds.

“As a result of operational-search and investigative measures, law enforcement officers detained three perpetrators. Police seized a portion of the stolen funds as physical evidence.

Appropriate investigative actions are underway to identify and bring to justice other potential accomplices to the crime. The investigation is being conducted under Article 181 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (extortion), which carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
