Post of Georgia’s Special Representative for Relations with Russia Remains Vacant

The post of Special Representative of the Prime Minister of Georgia for Relations with the Russian Federation is vacant, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists. He did not specify, however, when exactly Giorgi Kajaia left office.

“It seems you do not have updated information. At this stage, this position is vacant. Mr. Kajaia moved to another field and resigned of his own accord,” Kobakhidze said.

As a reminder, Giorgi Kajaia was appointed Special Representative of the Prime Minister for Relations with Russia in March 2024. He succeeded Zurab Abashidze, who had held the position for 12 years and conducted direct negotiations with Grigory Karasin within the framework of the so-called “Prague format.” Nothing is known about Kajaia’s activities or the continuation of this dialogue format with Russia.

Prior to this, Giorgi Kajaia served as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Interests Section of Georgia at the Embassy of Switzerland in Russia. He also worked as an adviser to Zurab Abashidze during the latter’s tenure as Special Representative for Relations with the Russian Federation.
