Former Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili Faces New Corruption Charges

Former Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili, who claimed last week that he was facing pressure from the ruling Georgian Dream party, has been hit with new corruption charges.

The case involves “the acceptance of an exceptionally large bribe by a group of persons through prior conspiracy.”

As Amiran Guluashvili, Deputy Prosecutor General of Georgia, stated at a special press briefing, testimony in the new case was provided by detained former Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze. In addition, Vasil Mkheidze—Burchuladze’s brother-in-law—approached the prosecutor’s office in July to cooperate with investigators and provided “comprehensive information.”
