According to the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia, temporary modular school infrastructure is set to be deployed across the country. The fund has already announced a tender to procure the units.
The program will be rolled out in schools where the construction of a new building or the renovation of an existing one necessitates the creation of temporary educational spaces. A modular school is a facility assembled from prefabricated, transportable classroom units that can be quickly installed on site.
A total of up to 750 modules are planned for procurement: 600 classrooms, 100 administrative units, and 50 sanitation facilities.
“The decision to procure temporary modular school infrastructure was made jointly by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Ministry of Education. The goal of the initiative is to provide students with safe, fully equipped, and functional temporary learning environments in a timely manner during the construction of new schools and the rehabilitation of existing ones, ensuring that construction work does not disrupt the educational process and minimizing the need to transfer students to other schools. <…>
Thanks to modular schools, students will be able to temporarily continue their education directly on or near their school grounds, in a safe and fully equipped environment. This will eliminate the need to transfer children to other schools, remove the burden of daily commuting, and ensure the continuity of the learning process,” the statement reads.
The Development Fund also noted that each classroom will accommodate 10–12 students and one teacher. The administrative modules will house offices for school administration, mandaturi (school safety officers), and medical staff, as well as utility rooms and dedicated restrooms. This infrastructure is designed for repeated use and can be relocated to a new site whenever necessary.
The modules can be interconnected to create a unified school facility of the required area and layout. If necessary, they can be assembled in various configurations, including two-story structures.
All units will be equipped with power supply, lighting, heating and air conditioning, fire safety systems, CCTV surveillance, and telecommunications networks, and will be fully accessible for persons with disabilities.
“Temporary modular infrastructure is designed for multiple uses: once work at a specific school is completed, the modules can be dismantled, transported to another site, and reassembled,” the Development Fund stated.
The fund also emphasized that the use of such temporary modular spaces is an established practice across Europe, particularly during school construction and renovation projects when temporary educational facilities must be deployed rapidly.
