Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili has described the latest public letter from prison by former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili as an attempt to shift a legal matter into the political sphere.
“We have seen attempts to politicize such topics at various times before, but it yields no results. There are legal issues, and there are charges brought by the prosecutor’s office. An answer must be given to these charges. I believe everything else—political insinuations—is superfluous.”
Papuashvili also stated that he would not wish upon anyone “that people’s personal tragedies be used for political insinuations.” “We know who resorts to such methods, and over the years we have grown accustomed to various tragedies being exploited, whether it is suicide or something else,” the parliamentary speaker added. According to him, “at the very least, respect should be shown to the soul” of the person who committed suicide.
As a reminder, on September 1, Irakli Garibashvili released his fourth open letter, in which he criticized incumbent Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Mamuka Mdinaradze, who recently announced his departure from politics. In addition, Garibashvili raised questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of former human rights activist Lazare Jorbenadze, who committed suicide.
