As part of the investigation into the suicide of Lazare Jorbenadze, which occurred on April 4, 2026, a number of investigative and procedural actions have been carried out, and at this stage, the fact of suicide has been reliably confirmed. This was reported by the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.
The agency noted that, despite this finding, Garibashvili himself and several other individuals will be questioned based on public statements made by the convicted Irakli Garibashvili and others, including:
- Co-chair of the Coalition for Change, Nika Gvaramia;
- Leader of the Alliance of Patriots party, Irma Inashvili;
- Television host Nanuka Zhorzholiani;
- Member of the United National Movement party, Khatia Dekanoidze;
- Member of the Lelo — Strong Georgia party, Tazo Datunashvili;
- Political analyst Gia Khukhashvili;
- Member of the Georgia party, Giorgi Liluashvili;
- Journalist Zaza Davitaia;
- Activist Ermile Nemsadze;
- Giorgi Gigauri.
Earlier, as part of the investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, persons who had been in contact with the deceased, including family members and his spouse, were questioned.
As a reminder, former Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili issued another open letter from prison on September 1, in which he asked, among other things: “What was the real cause of the death of human rights activist Lazare Jorbenadze?” Jorbenadze was an interviewee for the newspaper Asaval-Dasavali who had been critical of the current authorities. According to Garibashvili, the public “still has unanswered questions regarding the series of suicides that took place during the Kobakhidze-Mdinaradze rule.”
