The European Union’s Ambassador to the UN stated that the EU strongly condemns “arbitrary detentions and intensifying repression” in Georgia. In a statement released on September 8 in connection with the report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, EU Permanent Representative Michele Cervone d’Urso addressed the human rights situation across several countries.
Addressing the situation in Georgia, the diplomat noted: “The European Union reminds Georgia of its obligation to respect fundamental freedoms and strongly calls for the repeal or substantial revision of recent legislation that undermines international human rights standards.”
“The EU is deeply concerned about the politically motivated use of the judiciary against civil society organizations and the adoption of repressive measures against opposition figures, human rights defenders, and independent media.
The EU strongly condemns arbitrary arrests and escalating repression, including the imprisonment of opposition leaders, independent journalists, media workers, and civil society representatives.
The EU emphasizes the need for Georgia to address these issues, align its policies with international standards, and engage in constructive dialogue to restore trust in its democratic institutions.”
In addition to EU member states, the statement delivered by the EU Permanent Representative to the UN was endorsed by Albania, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.
