Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has nominated Tamaz Borashvili for the position of Head of the State Security Service. The head of government made the announcement at a special briefing shortly after former head of the service Geka Geladze announced his resignation.
“Today, we are presenting the candidacy of Tamaz Borashvili to the Parliament of Georgia for the post of Head of the State Security Service of Georgia. Tamaz Borashvili has served in the law enforcement system for more than 20 years. He began his career in the state security system at the most junior level and advanced steadily through various ranks within the Counterintelligence Department.
Between 2017 and 2022, Tamaz Borashvili held the positions of First Deputy Head and Head of the General Inspection at Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs. In 2022, he returned to the State Security Service, serving as Head of the Tbilisi Main Division of the State Security Department and Director of the State Security Department. Earlier this year, he was appointed Deputy Head of the State Security Service.
I want to specifically emphasize that, for the first time in two decades, a career officer from within the state security system will take helm of the agency, which we believe will play a crucial role in its institutional strengthening. I am confident that the Parliament of Georgia will place its trust in Tamaz Borashvili. I wish Tamaz Borashvili every success as Head of the State Security Service,” Kobakhidze stated.
Tamaz Borashvili’s nomination as head of the State Security Service must be confirmed by parliament.
Following the departure of Grigol Liluashvili as head of the State Security Service in the spring of 2025 (he is currently detained on corruption charges), the agency has seen a series of reshuffles and resignations. After Liluashvili, lawmaker Anri Okhanashvili led the service for several months before being succeeded by Mamuka Mdinaradze, a prominent leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party (who recently announced his departure from politics). In April 2026, former Minister of Internal Affairs Geka Geladze took the post. According to Prime Minister Kobakhidze, Geladze will now return to the Ministry of Internal Affairs as deputy minister, a role he previously held.
