The Parliament of Georgia has confirmed Tamaz Borashvili as the Head of the State Security Service (SSG). Lawmakers unanimously backed Borashvili’s candidacy with 83 votes.
Under Georgian legislation, the head of the SSG is elected for a six-year term; however, this issue has appeared on the parliamentary agenda for the fourth time in the past year and a half. Following the departure of agency head Grigol Liluashvili in the spring of 2025 (who is currently under arrest facing corruption charges), the service has seen a succession of appointments and resignations.
On April 4, 2025, Anri Okhanashvili assumed the post, but stepped down as early as August 23 of the same year. Okhanashvili was succeeded by Mamuka Mdinaradze, who was confirmed by parliament as head of the agency on September 3, 2025. However, on April 21, 2026, Mdinaradze resigned, and was replaced by Geka Geladze. The latter announced his resignation on September 14.
As for Tamaz Borashvili, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated while presenting his candidacy that he has served in the law enforcement system for more than 20 years. «In the state security system, he began his work from the most entry-level position and pursued a consistent career path through various ranks in the Counterintelligence Department. <…> I would like to specifically emphasize that Tamaz Borashvili will become the first career officer of the state security system in the past two decades to take up the post of head of this agency».
Kobakhidze also noted that from 2017 to 2022, the new SSG head served in Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs as First Deputy Head of the General Inspection and Head of the General Inspection. In 2022, he returned to the State Security Service, where he held the posts of Head of the Tbilisi Main Division of the State Security Department and Director of the State Security Department. Earlier this year, he was appointed Deputy Head of the State Security Service.
