Kobakhidze: Georgia Is Not Imposing Bilateral Sanctions Against Iran

Georgia is not imposing any bilateral sanctions against Iran, the country’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has stated, adding that such a move "would be absurd and wrong." According to him, Tbilisi acts "in accordance with the established sanctions regime."

This was the Georgian head of government’s response to the suspension of flights by Iranian airlines to the country. The Iranian ambassador to Tbilisi had previously stated that Tehran respects this choice, but reserves "the right to make its own choice."

Kobakhidze noted in this regard that Georgia acts strictly in accordance with the sanctions regime.

"Relevant sanctions were triggered, and given that Georgia always takes into account sanctions regimes concerning various countries when specific institutions and states introduce such restrictions, we also made the corresponding decision, regarding which the Ministry of Economy issued a statement."
