S&D: De Facto Annexation of South Ossetia Is a Gross Violation of International Law

The European Parliament’s political group, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), has issued a statement in support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and other nations. Respect for internationally recognized borders is essential to ensuring European security, the group noted.

The statement by S&D emphasized that the Russian Federation has stepped up efforts aimed at the de facto annexation of South Ossetia, describing it as a “gross and unacceptable violation of international law, as well as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.”

According to the European Parliament political group, Russia’s actions are part of Moscow’s broader drive to extend its control over the territories of neighboring states. In this context, the S&D cited Ukraine’s Donbas and Crimea, Moldova’s Transnistria, and Georgia’s Abkhazia.

“Achieving long-term stability and security in the Caucasus and in Europe as a whole is only possible with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every state,” the statement underscored.
