Georgia’s external debt increases by $52 million in one month

As of August 2026, Georgia’s public external debt stands at $9.068 billion, up $52 million from the previous month.

Specifically, according to data published by the Ministry of Finance, the volume of public debt stood at $9.016 billion as of July 2026.

Meanwhile, the government’s direct external debt totaled $8.805 billion in August. Of this sum, debt owed to multilateral creditors exceeds $6.759 billion, while obligations to bilateral creditors stand at $1.547 billion.

Notably, during the reporting period, the external liabilities of the National Bank of Georgia amounted to $263.234 million.

According to data for August 2026, the state’s largest creditors are the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

In particular, the list of major creditors as of August 2026 is as follows:

  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) — $2.508 billion;
  • World Bank, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) — $1.914 billion;
  • European Investment Bank (EIB) — $1.348 billion;
  • World Bank, International Development Association (IDA) — $345.770 million;
  • Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) — $243.058 million;
  • European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) — $209.430 million.

In addition, the Government of Georgia owes $846.051 million to France, $576.889 million to Germany, $106.078 million to Japan, as well as debts to several other countries.
