The Ministry of Education of Georgia has issued a statement regarding the situation surrounding Tbilisi Public School No. 21, which was closed on the third day of the academic year. The agency stated that the school will soon welcome students back.
According to the ministry, as reported by the news outlet Publika, an updated expert assessment has been finalized, making it possible to conclude the 2026–2027 academic year in the same building following several weeks of work.
“An updated assessment of the building’s condition revealed that, to ensure safety, specific rehabilitation work must be carried out at Public School No. 21, which will take several weeks. Following this, students will return to the school, where classes will proceed until the end of the current academic year under continuous monitoring of the structural integrity. Starting in the summer, full-scale reconstruction work will begin at the school, during which the learning process will continue in an alternative facility.”
In recent days, protests involving parents, teachers, and students have taken place outside Public School No. 21.
On September 18, just three days after the start of the term, classes were abruptly suspended. It was revealed that the building was structurally unsafe, classes needed to be halted, the school demolished, and students redistributed to other schools across different shifts.
