Georgia’s State Security Service Detains Citizen Over Illegal Handling of Nuclear Material

Officers of Georgia’s State Security Service have detained a citizen of the country over the illegal handling of nuclear material. According to the agency, the detainee planned to sell it to a foreign national.

“Following a joint operation, officers from the Counterintelligence Department and the Special Operations Department of the State Security Service of Georgia detained a Georgian citizen over the illegal handling of nuclear material, specifically the radioactive substance ‘uranium.’

The investigation established that the detainee planned to sell the nuclear material in his possession, ‘uranium-238,’ to a foreign citizen for 700,000 US dollars.

The investigation is being conducted under Article 230 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years of imprisonment,” the statement reads.
