Kobakhidze: We Understand Democracy Better than Europe Does

Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze has once again criticized the “European bureaucracy,” stating that “these people want to bring back to power the force whose hallmark was human rights violations, disregard for democracy, and the trampling of the rule of law.” According to the head of government, such an attitude from Brussels negatively impacts European sentiment within Georgian society.

Kobakhidze assured that Georgia upholds the principles of the rule of law. Commenting on today’s statements by EU Ambassador to Tbilisi Paweł Herczyński, he said: “This man calls democracy and human rights the outrages we have witnessed over these years on Rustaveli Avenue, the repeated attempts to stage a revolution, which, unfortunately, were openly supported by the European bureaucracy.”

“That is precisely what they call democracy and human rights. We understand what democracy and human rights are better [than they do]. Unfortunately, Europe has lost the correct perception and analysis of this. Georgia strictly adheres to these principles—to what is called the rule of law, democracy, and human rights.

Since 2012, one of our main achievements has been the consolidation of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Against this backdrop, it is regrettable that the European bureaucracy mourns the network of agents that once governed the country and made a name for itself by trampling on the rule of law, democracy, and human rights,” Kobakhidze stated.

The Prime Minister also accused the European bureaucracy of double standards, which he claimed it has pursued for many years. According to him, Brussels is concerned solely with the fact that “they failed to return the bloody regime to power.”

“The violent demonstrations we witnessed in 2024 and earlier served as a tool to return to power the bloody political force known as the collective ‘National Movement’ [the United National Movement party]. They supported radicals, branding them peaceful demonstrators, while simultaneously condemning law enforcement actions, including the proportional use of force. On the one hand, disproportionate force did occur, which we also condemned; however, alongside that, these bureaucrats condemned even the proportional use of force.

In reality, these people are concerned only with the fact that they failed to return the collective ‘National Movement’ to power. The Georgian people went against their intentions and made the choice necessary for the stable and consistent development of our country,” Kobakhidze declared.
