EU Foreign Ministers Comment on Situation in Georgia at Luxembourg Meeting

Ahead of the European Union foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg, foreign ministers of the member states commented on the situation in Georgia and relations between Tbilisi and Brussels.

According to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, at today’s meeting the foreign ministers will only briefly touch upon the topic of Georgia; however, she will propose holding an in-depth discussion in January.

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže told reporters that the aspirations of the Georgian people diverge from the actions of their government.

«The situation on the ground has not changed: the Georgian people want to be part of Europe, but unfortunately, the government has not taken the necessary steps,» Braže said.

«I cannot predict how the discussion will go, as we will hear reports from both the European External Action Service and the European Commission. The situation on the ground has not changed. The population of Georgia wants to be part of Europe. Unfortunately, the government has not taken the appropriate steps,» the Latvian foreign minister added.

In turn, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova emphasized that the time has come to discuss «where we stand» and what role Georgia can play as a Black Sea region country.

“It is very important to involve them in a dialogue on how we will ensure the security of the Black Sea. Therefore, we need to think seriously about sectoral areas where their role will be significant and dialogue with them is crucial. Accordingly, I believe now is the right time to start talking about this,” Petrova-Chamova noted.
