Georgia begins monitoring internally displaced persons applying for compensation instead of housing

In Georgia, as part of a program providing monetary compensation to internally displaced persons (IDPs), the monitoring of displaced families has begun. During the initial stage, documents submitted on the first day of the application process were reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Starting today, monitoring teams will begin operating across Georgia. The collected materials will be submitted to the Commission on Issues of Internally Displaced Persons for decision-making, after which the compensation disbursement phase will begin,” the ministry said in a statement.

In parallel, the agency noted that the acceptance of applications from displaced families wishing to join the program will run through November 2 inclusive.

According to official data, 58 million GEL (about $22 million) has been allocated this year for cash compensation payouts to internally displaced persons. Those wishing to participate in the financial compensation program can submit an application from October 19 to November 2 inclusive. Applications are being accepted at Public Service Halls across the country.

As previously reported, the Georgian government offered IDPs from Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region 10,000 GEL (about $3,800) per person as an alternative to state-provided housing.
