Man Accused of Assaulting Belarusian Tourist Detained in Tbilisi

Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has reported the detention of a man involved in an attack on a Belarusian citizen.

The incident occurred several days ago. Aleksandra, a fitness trainer from Minsk, claims that a stranger attacked her at the Tbilisi railway station. The alleged reason was that she was speaking Russian with a friend.

Once at the police station, according to the news outlet Baza, the man offered his own version of events. He claimed he struck the tourist after an unsuccessful attempt to strike up an acquaintance with her. The victim has denied this account of what happened.

The Georgian Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs, reports that the man was apprehended in hot pursuit under Article 126 of the country’s Criminal Code.

The article provides for liability for battery or other violence that causes physical pain to the victim. The offender faces a fine, community service, house arrest, or up to one year of imprisonment.

A similar incident drew media attention in July 2026, when an altercation broke out between Russian tourists and wedding guests at the Agarani Astate hotel in Kakheti.

Following the clash, the victims claimed the attack was motivated by personal hostility because they were speaking Russian. However, the wedding guests maintained that the tourists had been shouting from a balcony and poured liquid onto the sound equipment. Video footage from the wedding was later released, corroborating that version.
