Activist Nana Sander Released from Prison Following Plea Bargain

Civil activist Nana Sander, who was convicted in the “October 4” case, has been released from prison. She was freed under a plea agreement, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Georgian Service reports.

Sander finalized the plea bargain on November 2 at the Court of Appeals. Under the judge’s ruling, she was sentenced to one year and one month in prison, as well as a two-year suspended sentence.

During the court hearing, Nana Sander pleaded guilty.

“I plead guilty. I fully agree with my lawyer. I consent to entering into a plea agreement for a term of one year and one month,” she stated.

On June 24, 2026, the Tbilisi City Court found Nana Sander guilty of organizing group violence and sentenced her to seven years’ imprisonment.

During the trials, Sander stated that she had been subjected to mistreatment while in detention.

Nana Sander lived in exile for 16 years. After returning to Georgia, she joined the protest movement.

A number of defendants convicted in the “October 4 case” have been entering into plea bargains at the appellate review stage. On November 4, opposition politician and former Prosecutor General Murtaz Zodelava, along with former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Lasha Beridze, were released from a penitentiary facility.

A total of 64 individuals, including political figures, were charged in connection with the events of October 4, 2025. On that day, concurrently with municipal elections in Georgia, a mass protest took place in Tbilisi calling for the “peaceful overthrow” of the government. A group of demonstrators attempted to breach the presidential palace but was dispersed by riot police.
