Marta Kos: The EU Will Do Only as Much on Georgia as Member States Want

“Regarding Georgia, we can only do as much as member states want to do,” European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos responded at a meeting of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs to an MEP’s question concerning the suspension of the visa-free regime for Georgia.

Specifically, Member of the European Parliament Krzysztof Brejza noted in his question that, according to information coming from Georgia, the revocation of the visa-free regime for diplomatic and service passport holders had a very negligible impact. In this regard, he asked the European Commissioner whether the European Commission was considering a broader suspension of the visa-free regime and whether there was a realistic chance in the Council of the EU to reach consensus on targeted sanctions.

“Next week, we will have a substantive discussion on Georgia in the FAC (Foreign Affairs Council). We can only do as much as the member states wish to do,” the European Commissioner replied.

Earlier, Marta Kos stated that today Georgia is an EU candidate country “only on paper.” The European Commission approved enlargement preparation documents that review the policies preceding the accession of new members to the bloc. In particular, this applies to four candidate countries: Albania, Moldova, Montenegro, and Ukraine. Georgia was not included on this list.
