Kobakhidze: Moldova and Ukraine Outpace Georgia Only in Negative Indicators

If Moldova and Ukraine lead Georgia in anything, it is solely in negative indicators, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has stated.

The head of the Georgian government made these remarks commenting on the European Commission’s approval of preparatory enlargement documents concerning four candidate countries: Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, and Montenegro. In this context, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos noted that Georgia remains a candidate “only on paper” and that she would like to see the country “at the same level as Moldova and Ukraine.”

“If Moldova and Ukraine lead Georgia in anything, it is strictly in negative metrics. God forbid we overtake Moldova and Ukraine in such things. We have our own path. Our path is peace and economic development, and we will certainly continue to follow it,” Kobakhidze said.

According to the Prime Minister, Tbilisi would like to see a “fair, correct, and healthy approach” from the European Commission.

“We have clearly stated our political intentions and will, which means continuing along the path of European integration. You know that 90% of the commitments under the Association Agreement have already been fulfilled. We are implementing our obligations in good faith. You know the situation in Georgia—how we are 1,000 steps ahead of both Ukraine and Moldova, as well as other candidate countries. The rest is already a matter of a healthy attitude. If the European Commission shows a healthy attitude toward Georgia, European integration will proceed unhindered.”
