The wife of Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Sadygov has published a letter which she claims was addressed to the Deputy Prosecutor General of Georgia, Amiran Guluashvili, and signed on behalf of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan. The letter proposes that the Georgian side “leave without consideration” the request for Sadygov’s extradition dated July 12, 2024.

“The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan expresses its respect to the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia and reports that within the framework of the investigation conducted by the Prosecutor General’s Office, on April 1, 2026, an investigator decided to terminate the criminal prosecution against Khatamkhan oglu Sadygov.

In view of the above, we request that the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia for the extradition of Afgan Sadygov dated July 12, 2024, be left without consideration,” the letter states.

As a reminder, the court reached the decision to deport Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Sadygov to his homeland in the early morning of April 5. Azerbaijan had been seeking his extradition for nearly two years.

Sadygov was an active participant in protests held in Tbilisi and has been detained several times in recent years, including on charges of blocking a road. In 2024, he was placed under extradition arrest as a preventive measure.

Lawyers stated that the journalist is being persecuted in Azerbaijan due to his critical stance, and that his life could be in danger in the event of extradition. During his detention, Sadygov went on a hunger strike for 141 days.
