Mdinaradze Vows to Prevent Violence by Security Forces

“When a law enforcement officer kicks a young man lying on the ground in the face, when a journalist—whoever they may be—is targeted, such actions will be strictly prevented, and we may also look into past cases,” Mamuka Mdinaradze stated on the Imedi TV channel.

According to him, he had not addressed this topic previously; however, his “current and future authority now allows him to speak about it more boldly.”

“We have thought about this a lot, discussed it extensively, and even felt deeply distressed when a law enforcement officer kicks a young man lying on the ground in the face, or when a journalist—whoever they are, whatever they are like, it makes no difference [is mistreated]. I am not saying this for the first time; I have mentioned it before, including in your previous broadcasts, but now my current and future authority gives me the opportunity to speak about this more boldly…

The prevention of such incidents will be strictly ensured, and we may also investigate past occurrences,” stated Mamuka Mdinaradze.

As a reminder, personnel changes are underway within “Georgian Dream” (the ruling party)—Irakli Kobakhidze announced on April 21 that Geka Geladze is stepping down as Minister of Internal Affairs to become the head of the State Security Service of Georgia.

Mamuka Mdinaradze will assume the post of Vice Prime Minister, as well as a new position—State Minister for the Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies (the corresponding changes are subject to parliamentary approval).

Regarding the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD), Sulkhan Tamazashvili is being appointed to this position.
