UNM Chair: Decision to join “Alliance of Opposition” was initiated by Saakashvili

“Just as we made a joint decision to join, we will make a joint decision to leave, if it comes to that,” stated Tina Bokuchava, Chair of the United National Movement (UNM), commenting on remarks by some opposition members regarding Georgia’s third president. She noted that the party’s decision to join the “Alliance of Opposition” was made not only with the participation of Mikheil Saakashvili but at his initiative.

“Our task was to consolidate and galvanize opposition-minded people, the healthy part of society; to motivate those who may not like Ivanishvili [Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party] but understand that replacing Ivanishvili and removing the regime will not lead to war, and the country will move in the right direction.

In the so-called elections, they failed to secure the support of more than 20% of voters, including for Kakha Kaladze, who is their most popular figure. Our task is the mobilization and consolidation of the healthy part of society—meaning strengthening and uniting—as well as galvanization, which is when you are not only united but ready to act.

To move to action, one needs faith in victory and confidence that you are capable of achieving it. It was precisely for the sake of consolidation, galvanization, and faith in victory that we joined the ‘Alliance of Opposition,'” Tina Bokuchava stated.
