Grigol Gegelia, one of the leaders of Lelo – Strong Georgia, stated following a meeting with US State Department delegates that the American side does not intend to leave Georgian society without support and is interested in political stability in Georgia.
He noted that this was already the third meeting in a short period, which, according to him, indicates a high level of US involvement in the situation in Georgia.
Gegelia noted that Washington views Georgia as an important geopolitical and strategic region.
During the talks, the opposition politician said, they discussed the political crisis in Georgia, the work of state institutions and the need for their “normal functioning,” including parliament. They also discussed the release of prisoners whom the Georgian opposition considers political prisoners, as well as holding new elections.
According to Gegelia, the US State Department representatives also expressed interest in preserving the “Middle Corridor” project—a transport and logistics route between Europe and Asia passing through the Caucasus.
“They well understand that the political crisis harms both Georgian political and economic interests, as well as American ones.
We told them that we are ready to participate in a process in which we can achieve the release of political prisoners, the repeal of laws that harm the interests of the people in this country, and together initiate a dialogue on new elections.
I can say that on very many issues, our positions and those of the State Department largely align,” he said.
