Political Analyst: EU Will Not Suspend Visa-Free Travel for Georgia

Foreign policy expert and political analyst Tornike Sharashenidze stated that the European Union will not suspend the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens and urged not to overstate the significance of the upcoming dialogue between the parties.

According to him, a meeting between representatives of Georgia and the European Commission (EC) will take place in Brussels on June 11, focusing on visa-free travel and the fulfillment of visa liberalization conditions. The talks will be held as part of the standard dialogue between the EU and third countries.

Sharashenidze stated that the current situation between Brussels and Tbilisi is less tense than a year ago, which, in his view, reduces the risks of negative decisions. He recalled that in 2025, relations were more complex, but even then, the suspension of the visa-free regime was not implemented. Furthermore, this time, representatives of the Georgian government have been invited to participate—which was not the case previously—a move the analyst views as a sign of a more constructive dialogue format.

He emphasized that the main topic of discussion would be technical issues—specifically, the control of illegal migration and compliance with commitments under visa liberalization—noting that the EU has conducted such monitoring for many years, even before the introduction of the visa-free regime for Georgia.

Sharashenidze also commented on Georgia-US relations, stating that efforts to improve them have been ongoing for several months, though details have not yet been disclosed. He noted that politicians are trying to interpret statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, pointing out that such interpretations are often speculative in nature.
