Speaker: France itself regularly interferes in Georgia’s internal affairs

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili criticized France’s stance on sovereignty, commenting on French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement regarding the inadmissibility of external interference in his country’s legislation.

The politician stated that Paris itself regularly interferes in Georgia’s internal affairs.

“This also applies to France: you reap what you sow. When you interfere in the internal affairs of other states, you must be prepared to be treated the same way,” the speaker said.

Papuashvili noted that representatives of foreign states have repeatedly allowed themselves to comment publicly on Georgian legislation and government decisions, which, in his view, contradicts the principle of respect for state sovereignty.

The head of the Georgian parliament stated that it is precisely this practice that undermines the international order based on mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

“They themselves violated the international order, which implies respect for the sovereignty of other states. They did not respect Georgia’s sovereignty and, as a result, faced disrespect for their own sovereignty,” Shalva Papuashvili concluded.

Notably, this refers to a recent statement by French President Emmanuel Macron amid a dispute between Paris and Washington over a digital tax on major US tech companies.

Following criticism from US President Donald Trump, Macron stated that it is not for the US to determine what French or European legislation should be.
