The resolution adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which is based on a report on the functioning of democratic institutions in Georgia, does not rely on an objective and fact-based assessment, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated.
According to the ministry’s statement, the document contains biased interpretations and one-sided political assessments, and repeats false narratives about Georgia, raising serious questions about both its impartiality and the preparation process.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is particularly alarming that an international institution established to protect human rights, democracy, and the rule of law is increasingly being used as an instrument of political pressure.
“Such a practice damages the credibility of the Council of Europe itself and raises justified doubts about the impartiality of individual structures of the organization.
Attempts to discredit democratically elected authorities under the banner of protecting democracy, targeted criticism of legitimately functioning state institutions, and the encouragement of political forces that attempt to ignore the public mandate received through elections are unacceptable. Such an approach does not strengthen democracy, but rather contributes to the deepening of political polarization and stimulates radical processes.
A biased attitude towards the internal political and legal processes of a sovereign state, as well as the political assessment of legislative decisions made in consideration of national interests and in full compliance with constitutional procedures, is unacceptable. The demand to repeal laws without proper legal reasoning and objective assessment is concerning, as it goes beyond the institutional mandate and bears signs of political interference.
The Georgian authorities will firmly defend the country’s sovereignty, constitutional order, and the democratic choice of the Georgian people. Neither external political pressure, disinformation campaigns, nor unfair assessments can serve as a basis for ignoring Georgia’s national interests, its state independence, and its democratic legitimacy,” the statement reads.
