A court has found opposition politician and one of the leaders of the “Lelo – Strong Georgia” coalition, Aleko Elisashvili, guilty of an attempted terrorist act. Judge Giorgi Gelashvili sentenced the opposition figure to 13 years in prison.
The charges stem from an incident that took place in the chancellery building of the Tbilisi City Court. According to investigators, officers of the Security Service (mandaturi) thwarted Elisashvili’s actions, after which he was detained on the spot by law enforcement officers.
The politician was charged under Part 1 of Article 19–323 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which covers attempted terrorist acts. The penalty under this article carries a prison sentence of 10 to 15 years.
In addition, the politician was charged in connection with another incident under Part 1 of Article 323 of the Criminal Code of Georgia—committing a terrorist act, which is defined as an explosion, arson, assault on a person, use of weapons, or other actions committed for terrorist purposes and posing a threat of loss of life, significant property damage, or other grave consequences.
This article also carries a penalty of 10 to 15 years in prison.
