Gvaramia: Opposition’s Strategy is “Protests at Home, Sanctions Abroad”

Nika Gvaramia, one of the leaders of Ahali and the Coalition for Change, writes that the opposition’s strategy has been announced. It is encapsulated in the action formula: “Protests at home, sanctions abroad,” while the alternative, according to him, is that everyone must reflect on what they are doing, what they want, and what they plan to do.

“Everyone must reflect on what they are fighting for—whether it is political self-assertion, weakening opponents ahead of the 2028 elections, getting out of prison (or avoiding going there), or fighting for the country and against Bidzina,” the opposition politician noted.

Unity and an alternative, he stressed, are the primary demands of society and a crucial condition for protest, as was also demonstrated by the “May 26 rally.”

“People need to see that protest can be politically transformed and that the political spectrum is indeed capable of changing the situation. Without this faith, the protest also weakens—disappointment makes people passive.

Unity and an alternative are extremely important and decisive in strengthening the international community’s belief that change is possible, and that sanctions are not merely about punishing someone, but about helping the Georgian people and the democratic political spectrum facilitate the country’s return to the Western path and the restoration of democracy.

Everyone must reflect on what they are doing, what they want, and what they plan to do. Everyone must reflect on what they are fighting for—whether it is political self-assertion, weakening opponents ahead of the 2028 elections, getting out of prison (or avoiding going there), or fighting for the country and against Bidzina. Empty wordplay changes nothing and often serves to mislead society, as it so often happens: ‘we believe the oath, but the end astounds us,’” Gvaramia writes.
