Five years since the death of Lekso Lashkarava, included in the list of killed journalists

Five years have passed since the death of TV Pirveli cameraman Lekso Lashkarava. He fell victim to violence during the events of July 5, 2021, while carrying out an editorial assignment alongside journalist Miranda Bagaturia.

The attack on the camera crew occurred near the office of the Sirtskhvilia (Shame) movement. According to reports, about ten people attacked the journalists, using physical violence. Lashkarava sustained severe injuries, underwent surgery, and was found dead at his home a few days later.

David Kutaladze, convicted of the fatal beating of Lekso Lashkarava, as well as other defendants in the case, were released from prison early.

In 2022, UNESCO included Lekso Lashkarava in its list of killed journalists. He became the second journalist from Georgia recognized by the organization as having died in peacetime. The first was journalist Giorgi Sanaya, killed in July 2001.
