The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has released a statement refuting reports that 20,000 Russian citizens crossed the Russian-Georgian border via the Verkhny Lars checkpoint within a 24-hour period.
According to the ministry, this information does not correspond to reality and “serves the deliberate spread of disinformation by certain interested parties.”
“We clarify that, according to data for the past 24 hours, 7,880 citizens of various countries crossed the state border of Georgia through the Lars checkpoint.
Additionally, during the same period, the country was exited through the same checkpoint by
8,406 citizens of various countries.
We urge all interested parties to refrain from disseminating unverified information, as well as from spreading data in a distorted form and with incorrect interpretation,” the ministry stated.
Earlier, the Federal Customs Service of Russia (FTS) reported that passenger traffic through the Verkhny Lars checkpoint had broken a record. According to the agency’s data, more than 20,000 people crossed the border in a single day on August 18.
