Russia to Reconstruct Pedestrian Section of Checkpoint on “Border with Abkhazia”

Glavgosexpertiza of Russia (Main Department of State Expertise) has issued a positive evaluation for the reconstruction of the pedestrian section of the Adler checkpoint on the Abkhazian sector of the Russian-Georgian border.

As reported by the newspaper Kommersant, the active phase of the works is scheduled to begin in September, with preparatory measures currently underway on-site. The entire checkpoint reconstruction project is slated for completion in 2028.

The Adler checkpoint remains the only and most heavily utilized border crossing on the so-called “Russian border with Abkhazia.” In 2025, approximately 2.8 million vehicles and more than 12 million people passed through it. The approval of the pedestrian section’s reconstruction was announced on August 19 by the press service of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation (Mintrans).

The reconstruction phases were reportedly scheduled taking into account seasonal traffic volume at the border crossing. During the tourist season, the main focus is placed on the freight corridor. In autumn, the priority shifts to bus and passenger car lanes, as the demand for cargo transit increases.

“The second phase provides for the modernization of the checkpoint’s pedestrian component. Specialists are currently carrying out preparatory work, and they plan to proceed to the main stage of reconstruction in September,” the report states.
