The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia has received no information indicating the presence of Georgian citizens in the natural disaster zone on the border between Nepal and China.
As the ministry told the Georgian Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the foreign ministry remains in constant contact with citizens currently in the region (who are safe) as well as with relevant specialized agencies.
A major flood struck the Himalayas on the morning of August 26. Dozens of settlements and the border crossing area between China and Nepal were inundated. The flood was triggered by a glacier collapse, which generated a powerful and fast-moving flood wave. According to the latest figures, at least 362 people have died, including 359 in Nepal and 3 in China, while 1,384 people are reported missing, among them hundreds of foreign tourists.
