Former Prosecutor General of Georgia Otar Romanov-Partskhaladze has labeled fighters of the “Georgian Legion” fighting in Ukraine on the side of the AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) as “war criminals.” The former prosecutor himself recently formed a “volunteer international” unit named “Georgievsky” in Russia aimed at supporting the military aggression against Ukraine.
During an interview with TASS, a journalist asked Romanov-Partskhaladze about his attitude toward the “Georgian National Legion,” which has been designated a terrorist organization and banned in the Russian Federation:
“The attitude toward them is unequivocal—they are war criminals who will certainly be held accountable for their actions and will be convicted under the laws of the Russian Federation.”
Earlier, Romanov-Partskhaladze stated that with the outbreak of the so-called SMO (Special Military Operation), he could not remain on the sidelines and decided to assist Russian military personnel, as well as residents of Donbas and the regions bordering Ukraine. According to the former prosecutor, the “Georgievsky” unit is joined by volunteers who value the shared history of Russia and Georgia and their “centuries-old brotherhood.”
It should also be recalled that in Georgia, a criminal case has been opened against Romanov-Partskhaladze under Article 109 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to organizing premeditated contract murder motivated by financial gain. The former prosecutor general stands accused of orchestrating an assassination attempt on businessman Levan Djangveladze.
Otar Romanov-Partskhaladze lost his Georgian citizenship after acquiring a Russian passport. Georgian authorities noted that this complicates the procedure for his extradition to his home country.
