The Head of the State Security Service of Georgia, Gela (Geka) Geladze, has tendered his resignation, announcing the decision in a written statement.
According to him, “following consultations with the political team, he will continue his work at another agency.”
“I have made the decision to step down from the position of Head of the State Security Service of Georgia.
Following consultations with the political team, I will continue my activities at another agency, where I will carry on serving the interests of our country and society with full dedication. Serving as Head of the State Security Service has been an immense responsibility and a privilege to serve our country.
Throughout this entire period, alongside every member of the service, our efforts were focused on effectively addressing the challenges facing the state, strengthening Georgia’s security, and protecting our national interests.
I would like to express my special gratitude to each employee of the State Security Service for their professionalism, dedication, and the vital work they carry out every day for the security of our country. I thank the political team, especially the Honorary Chairman of the [Georgian Dream] party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, for their trust. I am confident that the State Security Service will continue to honorably carry out the critical tasks entrusted to it and safeguard the nation’s security. Major General of State Security Geka Geladze,” the statement reads.
Following Mamuka Mdinaradze’s departure from Georgian Dream and politics, media reports indicate that officials regarded as his close associates are also stepping down from their positions.
A day earlier, the Head of the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance, Levan Kharabadze, who served as Mdinaradze’s deputy during the latter’s tenure leading the State Security Service (SSG), vacated his post. According to the news outlet Netgazeti, Kharabadze is a friend of Mdinaradze.
The Head of the Revenue Service, Mikheil Maghlakelidze, has also stepped down.
As for Gela Geladze, he was appointed Head of the State Security Service on April 22, 2026. Prior to that, from May 28, 2025, he served as Minister of Internal Affairs.
As SSG chief, he succeeded Mamuka Mdinaradze, who stepped down on April 21, 2026. Mdinaradze had led the SSG since September 3, 2025.
Before him, the agency was headed by Anri Okhanashvili, who remained in office for only four months.
The sequence of appointments and resignations within the SSG began after the departure of Grigol Liluashvili in the spring of 2025. Liluashvili is currently under arrest, facing corruption charges.
