UK Foreign Office Condemns So-Called Presidential Election in South Ossetia

London condemns the so-called “elections” in South Ossetia, stated Stewart Wood, the UK Deputy Foreign Secretary for Europe, Eastern Europe, International Security, and Economic Growth.

“Attempts to further entrench Russia’s control over Georgia’s occupied regions undermine Georgian sovereignty and territorial integrity and will not go unanswered. Russia must meet its ceasefire obligations undertaken in 2008,” the senior diplomat stated.

A de facto presidential election is taking place in occupied South Ossetia today, September 18. Four candidates are competing for the post of head of the region, with Kremlin-backed Marat Kambolov seen as the clear front-runner.
