Georgian emigrants staged a protest confronting Maka Bochorishvili and senior Foreign Ministry officials visiting New York as they arrived at the Georgian restaurant “Ubani,” the Netgazeti news outlet reported.
The Georgian delegation is in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs entered the establishment to shouts of “Aren’t you ashamed?!” Bochorishvili was accompanied by her deputy Lasha Darsalia, Georgia’s Permanent Representative to the UN David Bakradze, and other Foreign Ministry officials.
Reports initially emerged that Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze was also expected to visit the same restaurant; however, according to Netgazeti, he apparently changed his plans in light of the announced protest.
The emigrants confronted Foreign Ministry representative Archil Karaulashvili, demanding to know why they had been deprived of their right to vote. One protester stated that they were forced to live abroad to earn “a piece of bread” for their families. The official responded: “There are jobs in Georgia, too.”
