The Tbilisi Court of Appeals has upheld the verdict against Megis Kardava, a former high-ranking official of Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, in a torture case. According to the ruling of the court of first instance, Kardava was sentenced to nine years in prison.
As a reminder, the former head of the Military Police Department was charged in this case with violent acts of a sexual nature, torture, and unlawful deprivation of liberty.
Kardava is also a defendant in other criminal cases. In particular, about a week ago, he was sentenced by the Tbilisi City Court to five years and six months in prison on charges of misappropriation and embezzlement of state budget funds.
Megis Kardava was in hiding abroad for many years. He had been wanted under an Interpol Red Notice since 2013. Kardava’s extradition to Georgia took place on September 17, 2021.
