Who Buys Travel Insurance for Georgia and for What Duration

Citizens of Ukraine, Russia, and Kazakhstan lead in the number of travel insurance policies purchased for trips to Georgia among clients of the online service Polis.ge. These three groups accounted for more than 60% of insured records in a study covering January–September 2026. The data also reveals differences not only in the nationalities of clients, but also in the duration of the policies they purchase.

Starting January 1, 2026, foreign tourists entering Georgia must hold medical and personal accident insurance covering their entire stay. The minimum coverage amount is 30,000 GEL. This new requirement applies not only to short-term visitors staying a few days: the policy’s validity period must match the full duration of the trip.

Geography of the Insured and Ties to Georgia

According to a study by Polis.ge based on confirmed online orders over the first nine months of 2026, travel insurance via the platform was purchased for citizens of 81 countries and territories.

Ukrainian citizens accounted for a quarter of all insured records, closely followed by Russian citizens. Kazakhstan rounded out the top three at 13.3%.

The study also examined the use of Georgian phone numbers (+995 country code) when purchasing insurance. On average, a local number was provided in 25.5% of cases. Among Russian citizens, this share reached 43.7%, compared to 29.3% for Belarusians, 22.9% for Ukrainians, and 16.1% for citizens of Kazakhstan.

The presence of a local phone number also correlates with the chosen coverage duration. Customers using a +995 number are significantly more likely to purchase long-term policies lasting over 90 days. In particular, among Russian citizens with a Georgian phone number, the share of such policies reached 14.0% (compared to 3.0% for those with foreign numbers), while among Ukrainian citizens, the figure stood at 11.2% (compared to 3.1%).

Coverage Durations: Short-Term Policies Dominate

According to another Polis.ge study, the overwhelming majority of clients opt for short-term coverage. Policies covering up to two weeks account for 82.6% of all orders.

The most popular category remains policies valid for up to seven days, representing 55.7% of all sales—roughly double the share of policies covering 8–14 days (26.9%).

Travel Insurance Duration in Orders (January–September 2026)

Coverage Period Share of Orders
Up to 7 days 55.7%
8–14 days 26.9%
15–30 days 10.7%

Trends show that between May and September 2026, the share of short-term policies (up to 14 days) fluctuated between 76.4% and 86.8%. Peak demand for short-term coverage was recorded in May (86.8%) and July (85.8%), while the lowest figure for the summer–autumn period was observed in September (76.4%).

Key Considerations When Purchasing Insurance

In accordance with a decree issued by the Georgian government, tourists traveling to the country must ensure their policy meets the following requirements:

  • Coverage amount: No less than 30,000 GEL (approximately $11,500);
  • Validity period: Coverage must take effect upon crossing the border and cover the entire duration of the stay in the country;
  • Document language: The policy must be issued in Georgian or English;
  • Format: The document may be presented in either printed or digital form;
  • Deductible: The law does not mandate a zero deductible.

Policies can be issued by either Georgian or international insurance providers. However, when choosing a foreign insurer, travelers should carefully review the contract terms: when coverage begins, whether it extends across Georgia, and whether there are restrictions related to the place of purchase or the actual departure point.

Travel insurance is primarily designed for contingencies stipulated in the policy, including sudden illness or accidents. It does not serve as a substitute for comprehensive insurance intended for scheduled treatments or routine medical visits. On Polis.ge, travelers can review insurance regulations and select a policy that complies with Georgian legal requirements.
