‘Gakharia for Georgia’ to Renounce Parliamentary Mandates if Party Banned by Constitutional Court

The opposition party “For Georgia,” led by former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, will surrender its parliamentary mandates if the Constitutional Court bans the political force, according to party MP Shalva Kereselidze.

He noted that if “For Georgia” is outlawed, the parliamentary seats will lose all value and validity.

“None of the mandates are majoritarian—they are proportional seats won directly by the ‘Gakharia for Georgia’ party. In the event that our party is banned and its political activity is prohibited, I believe the mandates won by the party will hold no power or value. If our party is barred from conducting political activity, then naturally we will have no business in parliament, and these mandates will lose any value and validity,” Kereselidze stated.

As a reminder, the Constitutional Court of Georgia is currently reviewing a lawsuit filed by the ruling Georgian Dream party seeking to ban five pro-Western opposition parties. Alongside “Gakharia for Georgia,” those facing potential prohibition include the United National Movement, the Coalition for Change, Strong Georgia (Lelo), and the Federalists.
