The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line will enter full operation on June 2 following the completion of modernization work on its Georgian section, Georgia’s Ministry of Economy has announced.
The ministry explained that the project is a joint strategic initiative of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey, and plays a key role in strengthening transport connectivity between the EU and Asia.
The new railway route, the ministry added, creates additional transport opportunities in the region, helps diversify cargo flows, and enhances regional connectivity.
The total length of the Marabda–Kartsakhi railway section is 180 km. Under the project, 153 km of track were reconstructed and modernized, and a new 27-km railway section meeting European standards was built.
“Cargo volumes along the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line are growing annually. Once the line is fully operational, its capacity will increase to 5 million tons per year. This will allow the region to accommodate additional cargo flows and significantly boost its transport potential.
The full launch of this railway section was made possible by the signing of a bilateral coordination council protocol by the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Mariam Kvrivishvili, and the Minister of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan, Rashad Nabiyev, during the Georgian Prime Minister’s visit to Baku,” the ministry said in a statement.
